Federal Judge Blocks Trump From Revoking Whistleblower Attorney’s Security Clearance, Major Legal Setback
A federal judge in Washington has halted a Trump administration effort to revoke the security clearance of prominent whistleblower attorney Mark Zaid, ruling the move cannot be enforced while legal challenges proceed. The ruling matters now because it undercuts a presidential memorandum that targeted Zaid and others perceived as political adversaries.
The decision raises tension between executive authority and constitutional protections, with legal experts warning it could have broader implications for presidential power. Zaid sued the administration in May, saying the revocation was “improper political retribution” that threatened his ability to represent clients involved in national security matters.
U.S. District Judge Amir Ali granted a preliminary injunction blocking enforcement of the March memorandum against Zaid. The memo had listed Zaid among 15 individuals the White House said were “no longer in the national interest” to hold security clearances.
The judge’s order pauses the clearance action until at least Jan. 13 to allow time for potential government appeal, and he emphasized that normal revocation processes may still be pursued independent of the memo.

“This court joins several others in this district that have enjoined the government from using the summary revocation of security clearances to penalize lawyers for representing people adverse to it,” Ali wrote in his order.
The ruling matters because courts have repeatedly checked similar actions by the Trump administration targeting lawyers, firms, and officials, a pattern that raises questions about executive reach and due process.
What to watch for…
Legal observers will watch whether the government appeals and how higher courts address the balance between national security authority and constitutional safeguards. Government filings and hearings are expected in early January.
The judge’s decision leaves Zaid’s clearance blocked from being revoked under the contested memo for now.
