Federal Judge Halts Trump Push for 7 Years of College Race Admissions Data
A federal judge just blocked a Trump administration push to force colleges to prove they aren’t using race in admissions, escalating a broader fight over affirmative action enforcement.
The ruling halts a nationwide data demand that critics say was rushed and invasive, while supporters argue it’s needed to catch illegal discrimination still happening behind the scenes.
According to AP News and Reuters, U.S. District Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV issued a preliminary injunction stopping the Education Department from collecting years of race-based admissions data from public universities in 17 states.

The administration had argued schools might still be using “racial proxies” despite the Supreme Court’s 2023 ban on affirmative action.
But the court said the rollout was flawed and chaotic, not properly vetted with schools.
The legal fight isn’t over, and more rulings are expected as the administration continues pushing oversight of college admissions.
