Federal Judge Rejects DOJ Bid Targeting Powell, Cites Political Motive Claim
A federal judge has again blocked efforts to revive subpoenas targeting Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, escalating a legal clash with political implications.
According to Reuters and the Wall Street Journal, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg ruled the Justice Department failed to justify reinstating the subpoenas, saying prosecutors presented no new evidence and ignored earlier findings.
The subpoenas were part of an investigation led by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro into Powell’s testimony about costly Federal Reserve renovations. But Boasberg concluded the effort appeared aimed at pressuring Powell over interest rates rather than pursuing a legitimate criminal case.

That finding is now the central conflict.
The Justice Department argues the probe is valid and plans to appeal, while Powell has maintained the investigation is politically motivated.
The standoff is already having ripple effects.
According to Axios, the ongoing dispute is delaying confirmation of Trump’s pick to replace Powell, with Senate opposition tied directly to the unresolved case.
What happens next depends on the appeal but the legal fight is far from over.
