Federal Judges Rebuke DOJ as Voter Data Lawsuits Collapse Across States
A new lawsuit is escalating a growing national fight over voting rights and voter data.
Common Cause and several major civil rights groups sued the U.S. Department of Justice this week, accusing it of collecting sensitive voter information to build a nationwide database. According to the complaint, the DOJ has requested data from all 50 states, including Social Security numbers and addresses, raising concerns about privacy and election control.

The legal clash comes after months of conflict between federal officials and states. Reuters reported the DOJ has already sued more than 30 states that refused to hand over voter data, while some states have complied.
Courts are increasingly pushing back. Judges in multiple states have dismissed DOJ lawsuits, with one calling the requests a “fishing expedition.”
The DOJ says the effort is meant to ensure accurate voter rolls, but critics argue it could lead to wrongful voter purges ahead of the 2026 elections.
