Five Eyes Warn China Is Using Fake Job Ads to Target Government Personnel
The Five Eyes intelligence alliance has issued a rare joint warning that Chinese military intelligence services are using fake job advertisements and recruiter profiles on platforms such as LinkedIn, Indeed, and Upwork to target government employees, military personnel, and others with access to sensitive information.
According to the alliance’s “Safeguarding Our Secrets” bulletin, Chinese operatives allegedly pose as recruiters, consultants, or think tank representatives before asking candidates to provide reports and analysis that can gradually lead to requests for non-public or classified information.
The warning applies not only to active government workers but also to contractors, journalists, academics, and defense-sector professionals who may have indirect access to valuable information.

The coordinated alert is unusual because all five intelligence partners released it together, signaling a heightened level of concern. China has denied the allegations and accused Western governments of spreading false claims.
For job seekers, the message is simple: verify recruiters, research companies carefully, and be cautious when asked to provide detailed reports or sensitive information during hiring processes.
