Florida Lawmakers Clash With DeSantis Over $20B Property Tax Proposal
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is still pushing to eliminate homestead property taxes, but his plan is stalling as lawmakers fail to unify behind it.
The proposal, which would require a constitutional amendment, has yet to be formally introduced despite more than a year of discussion. According to the Miami Herald, the issue is notably absent from the agenda for an upcoming special legislative session, raising questions about political support.

Instead, Florida lawmakers are advancing multiple competing tax-cut proposals, creating friction over how far to go. The House has backed partial reductions, but the Senate has not moved forward, leaving no clear path to a ballot measure.
At the center of the conflict is the financial impact. Analysts estimate eliminating property taxes could strip tens of billions from local government budgets that fund schools, police, and infrastructure.
DeSantis has said a plan is still coming, but the delay is creating uncertainty for both lawmakers and taxpayers across Florida.
