Former Missouri Speaker John Diehl Sentenced to Federal Prison Over COVID Loan Fraud
Former Missouri House Speaker John Diehl has been sentenced to 21 months in federal prison after admitting he fraudulently obtained COVID-19 pandemic relief loans.
The sentencing closes a case involving one of Missouri’s most recognizable former lawmakers and adds to the growing list of prosecutions tied to misuse of pandemic aid.
According to reporting from USA Today and the Missouri Independent, Diehl pleaded guilty to fraud connected to federal COVID-19 relief programs intended to help struggling businesses stay afloat during shutdowns.
Prosecutors said the loans were approved through the Paycheck Protection Program administered by the U.S. Small Business Administration and were obtained using false information about business activity and payroll.

The case was investigated and prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice as part of a nationwide effort targeting fraud tied to pandemic relief funds.
Federal prosecutors said Diehl admitted the fraudulent claims during court proceedings leading up to sentencing.
“The defendant knowingly submitted false information to obtain pandemic relief funds,” prosecutors said in court filings.
The conviction comes years after Diehl resigned from the Missouri legislature in 2015 during an unrelated scandal, a fall that once ended the career of one of the state’s most influential political figures.

The federal government has since intensified enforcement around pandemic aid programs, with investigators reviewing billions of dollars distributed rapidly during the early months of COVID-19 shutdowns.
Officials say fraudulent claims siphoned money away from legitimate businesses struggling to survive during the crisis.
Federal watchdog agencies have warned that pandemic fraud cases will continue moving through courts for years as investigators track suspicious loans and relief payments.
For Diehl, the sentencing marks the latest chapter in a political career that ended in controversy and now concludes with a federal prison term.
