Fox Business Hosts Clash Over Power Line Threatening Maryland Christmas Tree Farm
Fox Business hosts clashed on air this week over a proposed high-voltage transmission line in Maryland that could cut through farmland, including a Christmas tree farm, as part of a broader push to meet rising electricity demand from data centers and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The project, known as the Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project, would construct a 67-mile transmission line costing roughly $424 million to carry power from western Maryland into northern Virginia, where electricity demand has surged due to the rapid expansion of data centers.
During a segment on The Big Money Show, host Dagen McDowell defended the project as necessary for economic growth and grid reliability. While discussing concerns raised by a Mount Airy Christmas tree farm that sits along the proposed route, McDowell suggested consumers could adapt by purchasing artificial Christmas trees instead.
Co-host Brian Brenberg pushed back, criticizing the visual impact of the transmission towers and raising concerns about the harm to local landowners and farms. The exchange highlighted tensions between infrastructure development and rural land preservation.
Farmers and property owners along the route have opposed the project, citing potential soil damage, loss of scenic land, and the possibility of eminent domain. Christmas tree growers argue the farms are seasonal businesses that support local economies and longstanding holiday traditions.
The transmission line proposal has drawn scrutiny as utilities and policymakers nationwide grapple with how to supply power for energy-intensive data centers while minimizing impacts on communities and agricultural land. Regulators have not yet approved the project, and opposition from landowners remains ongoing.
The dispute comes as communities nationwide face mounting pressure to accommodate AI-driven power demand while protecting farmland and local traditions.
