FSB Agents Storm Moscow Newsroom, Arrest Reporter Over “Data Misuse” Case
Masked Russian security agents raided a major independent newsroom in Moscow and detained a journalist, but the official explanation is already being questioned.
According to Reuters, authorities searched the offices of Novaya Gazeta and arrested investigative reporter Oleg Roldugin, citing alleged misuse of personal data. The outlet said lawyers were blocked from entering during the raid, raising immediate concerns about due process.

The timing is drawing scrutiny. The arrest came the same day Russia labeled Nobel-winning rights group Memorial “extremist,” escalating pressure on dissenting voices.
Roldugin had reportedly worked on sensitive investigations, including reporting tied to powerful regional figures, according to Reuters.
Critics say the move fits a broader pattern. Independent media in Russia has faced bans, arrests, and legal pressure since the Ukraine war began in 2022.
Novaya Gazeta itself has a long history of risk. Several of its journalists have been killed or attacked over the past two decades.
What remains unclear is whether this case will proceed through the courts or signal another tightening of media restrictions.
