Garden Grove Chemical Tank Crisis Forces 40,000 Evacuations Across Orange County
A chemical tank crisis at a Garden Grove aerospace facility has forced evacuation orders affecting roughly 40,000 people across Orange County as emergency crews work to prevent a possible spill or explosion.
The incident involves a tank at a GKN Aerospace facility containing methyl methacrylate, a flammable chemical used in plastics and manufacturing. Fire officials said the tank could fail in one of two ways: spilling an estimated 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of chemical material or entering thermal runaway and exploding, potentially affecting nearby tanks.
Evacuation orders have affected residents in Garden Grove and nearby cities, including Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress, Stanton and Westminster. Officials have said there was no active gas plume at the time of reported updates, but the evacuation orders were issued because of what could happen if the tank fails.
Crews have been cooling the tank with water and monitoring conditions as hazardous materials teams work to reduce the risk. Local reporting showed unmanned hoses and sprinkler systems spraying the overheated tank while officials warned residents to stay out of the evacuation zone.

The public health concern centers on methyl methacrylate exposure. The CDC’s NIOSH chemical guide lists methyl methacrylate as a flammable liquid and says exposure can occur through inhalation, ingestion, and skin or eye contact. Reported symptoms include irritation of the eyes, skin, nose and throat, with the eyes, skin and respiratory system listed as target organs.
What remains unclear is what caused the material in the tank to overheat and how long residents may remain displaced. Officials have not reported injuries in the cited updates, but they continue to urge residents in the evacuation area to follow emergency instructions.
