Gavin Newsom Office Calls Bovino “Nazi-Cosplayer” as Trump Replaces Him
The Gavin Newsom Press Office says the Trump administration is sidelining Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino and replacing him with Tom Homan as the main federal point of contact in Minneapolis. The official statement framed the move as a forced de-escalation following backlash over federal immigration enforcement.
In unusually blunt language, Newsom’s office said the administration was “benching the Nazi-Cosplayer for Mr. Bribes,” directly tying Bovino’s removal to rising unrest and political pressure. The post left little ambiguity about how California’s governor views the federal leadership change.
The statement cited remarks by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who confirmed that Homan will now serve as the “main point of contact on the ground in Minneapolis.” Bovino, according to Leavitt, will continue Customs and Border Protection duties elsewhere across the country.

Bovino had been the public face of the federal immigration surge in Minneapolis, and his presence became a focal point for protests and criticism from state officials. Newsom’s office portrayed the shift not as a routine reassignment, but as an admission that Bovino’s role had intensified tensions rather than reduced them.
Leavitt said, “Mr Bovino is a wonderful man and he’s a great professional… Mr Homan will be the main point of contact on the ground in Minneapolis.”
The contrast between the White House’s praise and Newsom’s condemnation highlights the widening political divide over immigration enforcement and federal authority in Democratic-led states.
Homan is expected to assume operational leadership immediately, and Minnesota officials are watching closely to see whether the change alters federal tactics or simply places a new face on the same strategy.
