There’s a clip making the rounds of former President George W. Bush talking about immigration — and it’s shocking how much he got right. In it, Bush warns about the rise of “isms” in American politics: isolationism, protectionism, and nativism. He even points back to the 1920s “America First” movement, noting how it led to disaster.

Sound familiar? That’s because Trump’s MAGA movement revived every one of those same toxic ideas. The same fear of immigrants, the same walls against the world, the same empty promise of “protecting” Americans while really just dividing them. Bush wasn’t perfect — far from it — but he understood something Trump never will: America’s strength comes from openness, not fear.

As Tony Michaels points out, our immigration problem isn’t unsolvable — it’s just hijacked by populists who need a scapegoat. The truth is written in Article I of the Constitution: Congress holds the power to fix immigration. Not a dictator. Not a demagogue.
