GKN Aerospace Faces 30+ Lawsuits After Garden Grove Chemical Tank Crisis and FBI Search
More than 30 lawsuits have been filed against GKN Aerospace as legal and criminal investigations continue following the chemical tank emergency that forced tens of thousands of Orange County residents from their homes.
According to Associated Press reporting, plaintiffs have filed at least 10 federal class-action lawsuits and more than 20 state court cases after an overheated tank containing methyl methacrylate triggered evacuation orders affecting roughly 50,000 people. The lawsuits allege negligence and seek damages related to business interruptions, evacuation costs and reported health effects.
The crisis began when a tank holding approximately 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, a highly flammable chemical used in plastics manufacturing, overheated at GKN Aerospace’s Garden Grove facility. Authorities warned that a catastrophic explosion was possible if pressure continued to build inside the tank.

Federal investigators have since escalated their response. FBI agents and Environmental Protection Agency personnel executed a search warrant at the facility seeking records, samples and evidence related to chemical storage, temperature controls and safety systems. Orange County prosecutors have also opened a separate criminal investigation.
Residents, business owners and local officials have continued raising concerns about the facility’s location near neighborhoods and commercial areas. Some business owners reported significant financial losses during the Memorial Day holiday period, while local leaders have called for stronger accountability measures and future safety reforms.
GKN Aerospace has said it is cooperating with investigators as the company faces growing legal exposure from one of Southern California’s most significant industrial emergencies in recent memory.
