GOP Erupts Over DHS Deal Excluding ICE as House Democrats Signal Support
House Democrats appear ready to back a Senate deal to fund most of Homeland Security—but not ICE—setting up a high-stakes clash in Congress.
According to Reuters and The Washington Post, the Senate passed a funding bill that would reopen DHS agencies after a six-week shutdown, but it excludes Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol funding.
That exclusion is the core conflict. Democrats have pushed for limits on immigration enforcement, while Republicans argue leaving ICE out weakens border security.
The deal now moves to the House, where Democratic support could help pass it, but Speaker Mike Johnson has not committed and conservatives are already pushing back.
The standoff has real-world impact. Airport delays surged and TSA workers went unpaid during the shutdown, increasing pressure on lawmakers to act.
At the same time, Republicans are signaling they may try to restore ICE funding through a separate bill, meaning the fight is far from over.
