“Great Job, Donald”: Newsom Torches Trump Over Surprise Job Loss Report
California Governor Gavin Newsom took a direct swipe at President Donald Trump on Wednesday after new employment data showed the U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 32,000 private-sector jobs in November.

Sharing a NewsWire report on X, Newsom added a short, cutting caption: “Great job, @realDonaldTrump.”
The remark came just hours after payroll firm ADP released its latest National Employment Report, showing the steepest monthly job loss since 2023. Economists had broadly expected job gains — not losses — making the negative print a jolt for financial markets and policymakers.
ADP’s data highlights weakening conditions across the economy:
Private employers shed 32,000 jobs in November.
Small businesses were hit especially hard, erasing tens of thousands of positions.
Manufacturing, construction, and professional services all posted declines.
Wage growth slowed again, continuing a months-long cooldown.
The report lands at a politically sensitive moment. With Trump loudly promoting his economic leadership ahead of 2026, Democrats quickly seized on the numbers as evidence that his policies are straining workers and small businesses. Newsom’s post was the first high-profile Democratic response — and one of the most pointed.
Economists warn the losses could signal a broader slowdown, though they caution that official government data — delayed this month due to the recent shutdown — will provide a fuller picture once released.
For now, the ADP report stands alone in shaping market expectations, and Newsom made clear who he thinks should answer for the surprise downturn.
