Hegseth Unleashes Military AI Platform as Critics Warn of “Unchecked Power Grab”
Washington, D.C. — The War Department on Tuesday launched a new artificial-intelligence platform called GenAI.mil, a system officials describe as the most aggressive AI deployment in U.S. military history. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced the rollout in a video statement, calling the platform a major step toward putting “the world’s most powerful frontier AI models directly into the hands of every American warrior.”

According to the department’s official release, GenAI.mil will allow U.S. service members, civilian employees, and contractors to access certified generative-AI tools across a secure military network. The first model available on the platform is a government-secured version of Google’s Gemini system, with additional frontier-level models expected to follow.
Hegseth framed the launch as part of a broader effort to overhaul U.S. military technology, saying the department is “aggressively fielding the world’s best technology to make our fighting force more lethal than ever before.” All models approved for GenAI.mil must meet Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and Impact Level 5 (IL5) security requirements.
The rollout comes as the department reclassifies artificial intelligence as a top-tier “Critical Technology Area” alongside quantum computing, hypersonics, directed-energy weapons, and contested logistics. Officials say the intent is to embed AI into daily military operations while training personnel at no cost.
Supporters argue the platform could streamline analysis, logistics, and decision-making across the defense system. Critics warn that rapid adoption of generative AI raises unanswered questions about reliability, oversight, and the risks of algorithmic error in high-stakes environments.
Hegseth emphasized that the new tools are American-built, calling GenAI.mil “another building block in America’s AI revolution.”
