House Blocks Green’s Trump Impeachment Bid 237–140 as Democratic Leaders Vote Present
The House confirmed Thursday that an impeachment push against President Donald Trump was shelved, after a procedural vote to table the matter passed 237–140 and Democratic leaders voted “present” instead of backing the effort.
The vote came after Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) forced a floor vote on his resolution to impeach Trump, reigniting a debate that has simmered throughout 2025. The failure to advance the resolution marks a sharp stalling point for Green’s repeated attempts to hold the president accountable while Republicans control the chamber.
House Republicans supported the motion to table, effectively killing the impeachment push before debate on the merits. In the final tally, 23 Democrats joined the GOP in voting to table the resolution, and 47 more Democrats cast “present” votes instead of siding with Green’s measure or opposing the tabling motion.
Top Democrats including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Minority Whip Katherine Clark and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar said in a joint statement that impeachment requires a comprehensive investigative process that has not occurred, a justification for their present votes.
Their statement emphasized that impeachment is “a sacred constitutional vehicle” and warned against rushing without thorough fact-finding, a point of internal conflict in the Democratic caucus.
The vote highlights a notable split among House Democrats over how to handle Trump’s conduct and whether impeachment is politically or procedurally justified at this time. Some Democrats argue that the lack of formal investigation weakens the case and could undercut broader oversight goals.
With midterms looming and political divisions deep, the outcome is likely to shape intraparty debates as well as Republican plans heading into 2026. The next steps may include renewed calls for investigative hearings or alternative oversight strategies. What happens next could redefine Democratic strategy on executive accountability.
