House Democrats Launch “Shadow Hearings” After Trump Election Threat Claims
House Democrats are preparing to hold “shadow hearings” in California on 2026 midterm election security, escalating a growing clash over how the elections will be conducted.
The move comes as Democrats warn of potential federal interference tied to President Donald Trump’s continued claims about election fraud and efforts to reshape voting rules.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the hearings will take place next week in Los Angeles and San Francisco, led by Rep. Joseph Morelle and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and will include testimony from election and voting experts.
The hearings are not official congressional proceedings, but Democrats say they are necessary to spotlight issues they claim are being ignored by the Republican-controlled House.
“We will not let President Trump and House Republicans’ efforts to take over our elections prevail,” Morelle said.

The push follows a series of actions and proposals tied to Trump and allies, including efforts to tighten voting rules, investigate election systems, and expand federal influence over how elections are run, moves that critics argue could undermine state authority.
At the same time, legal experts say any direct federal attempt to control or seize election infrastructure would likely trigger immediate court challenges, underscoring the limits of executive power in state-run elections.
The hearings are expected to feed into a broader political and legal battle as both parties position themselves ahead of the November 2026 midterms.
The next phase will likely include further investigations, legal challenges, and competing election proposals as the timeline tightens.
