Hungary Leader Magyar Threatens Arrest of Netanyahu If He Visits Budapest
Hungary’s incoming prime minister just drew a sharp line that could put Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu at risk of arrest.
According to multiple reports, PM-elect Peter Magyar said Netanyahu would be detained if he enters Hungary, citing the country’s obligations to the International Criminal Court.
The statement marks a direct reversal of Hungary’s previous stance under Viktor Orbán, who refused to enforce the ICC warrant during Netanyahu’s 2025 visit.
Magyar now says Hungary will remain in the ICC and must act if a wanted individual arrives.

The tension is immediate. Netanyahu has already accepted an invitation to visit Hungary later this year, setting up a potential diplomatic standoff.
The complication is that Magyar both invited Netanyahu and warned he could be arrested, leaving unclear whether the visit will proceed.
At the center is the ICC warrant issued in 2024 over alleged war crimes in Gaza, which Israel rejects.
What happens next could test both Hungary’s legal commitments and its political alliances.
