Hungary PM-Elect Magyar Warns Netanyahu Faces Arrest Over International Criminal Court Warrant
Hungary’s incoming prime minister says Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu would be arrested if he visits the country, signaling a sharp policy shift with immediate global implications.
The statement from PM-elect Peter Magyar introduces direct tension with Israel and raises questions about a planned visit already accepted by Netanyahu.
According to Al Jazeera and The Jerusalem Post, Magyar said Hungary would enforce International Criminal Court warrants and detain any individual wanted by the court, including Netanyahu.
The position reverses years of policy under outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who refused to arrest Netanyahu during a 2025 trip and instead moved to withdraw Hungary from the ICC.

Magyar has now pledged to halt that withdrawal, meaning Hungary would remain legally obligated to act on ICC warrants.
“If a person wanted by the ICC enters Hungary, that person must be taken into custody,” Magyar said.
The shift carries immediate consequences because Netanyahu has already agreed to visit Hungary later this year, potentially creating a direct legal confrontation.
At the center of the dispute is an ICC arrest warrant issued in November 2024 over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, which Israel denies.
The situation leaves unresolved whether Hungary will prioritize diplomatic ties or legal obligations if the visit proceeds.
