“I Was an Idiot”: Trump Voter Tells Congress Why He Regrets His Vote
A clip from a Capitol Hill hearing is going viral after a startling moment in which a witness bluntly explained why he voted for President Donald Trump.
During a Democratic-led Homeland Security “shadow hearing” on immigration enforcement, Jim Brown, a retired Navy combat veteran, was asked by Rep. Lou Correa (D-Calif.) whether he had supported Trump in the past.
Brown answered yes.
Correa then followed up with a simple question: “Why did you vote for him?”
Brown did not hesitate.
“Because I was an idiot,” he replied, drawing laughter from the room.
The exchange occurred as Brown testified about the detention of his wife, Donna, a lawful permanent resident who he says was taken into immigration custody despite having lived in the United States for decades. Brown told lawmakers that his family had been directly impacted by the Trump administration’s immigration policies — policies he said he once believed would target only violent criminals.

After the viral line, Brown expanded on his answer, saying that many evangelical Christian voters, including himself, had been misled by campaign promises about immigration enforcement. He described feeling betrayed as enforcement actions began affecting families like his own.
The hearing, organized by House Homeland Security Committee Democrats after Republicans declined to hold a formal session, focused on allegations of civil rights abuses and aggressive immigration raids. Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) stated that all testimony from the hearing would be entered into the committee record.
Clips of Brown’s remark have since spread rapidly across social media platforms, with many users reacting to the moment as an example of voter regret and disillusionment among some former Trump supporters.
The viral moment underscores how immigration enforcement has become a deeply personal issue for families across the political spectrum, including those who once backed the policies now affecting them.
