Iowa School Employees, Students Among Victims in Muscatine Shooting That Left 7 Dead
A domestic-dispute shooting that unfolded across multiple locations in Muscatine left six people dead before the suspected gunman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.
Police identified the suspect as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland. Investigators say four victims were found at a residence, while two additional victims were later discovered at separate locations in the city. Authorities believe all six victims were family members of McFarland.
The tragedy struck particularly hard within the Muscatine Community School District. District officials confirmed that two employees and two students were among those killed. School leaders activated counseling resources and support services for students, families, and staff.
“Our hearts are broken,” district officials said in a message to the community following the shootings.

Police Chief Anthony Kies described the violence as an “act of evil” that has deeply affected the city. Authorities say preliminary evidence points to a domestic-related dispute as the motive.
The victims were publicly honored during a community vigil attended by residents, school officials, law enforcement personnel, and family members. The gathering reflected the broader community’s effort to support survivors and remember those who were killed.
Beyond the criminal investigation, the shooting has left lasting impacts on local schools and families across eastern Iowa. The involvement of students and school employees has intensified community concern and expanded the tragedy’s reach beyond a single family. Mental health resources and grief support remain available as the investigation continues.
