Iran Seizes 2 Oil Tankers in Persian Gulf, 15 Crew Detained
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has seized two oil tankers in Gulf waters, escalating maritime tensions in the strategically vital Persian Gulf and raising fresh questions about regional security and international shipping.
According to AP News and Reuters, the IRGC said it intercepted the vessels on Feb. 5, alleging they were transporting more than one million liters of smuggled fuel near Farsi Island.
Iranian state media reported the tankers were escorted to the southern port of Bushehr and taken under control after discovery of the alleged illicit cargo.
So far, Iranian authorities have taken 15 foreign crew members into custody and referred them to the judiciary, though details about the flags of the ships or the nationalities of their crews remain undisclosed.
The IRGC’s statement framed the operation as part of its effort to combat fuel smuggling in regional waters — a charge Tehran has used repeatedly in similar incidents.
“No immediate clarity on nationality of the crews or ownership of the tankers,” noted Times of Israel in reporting on the incident.

Maritime analysts say this latest seizure adds to a pattern of Iranian naval actions that have previously drawn international scrutiny. Past seizures in the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz have sparked diplomatic pushback from Western and regional governments, though formal responses to this episode have not yet been issued.
The broader backdrop includes heightened U.S.–Iran tensions over naval operations and recent incidents involving Iranian patrols approaching commercial vessels.
As of now, foreign governments have not publicly commented and it remains unclear whether legal or diplomatic mechanisms will be invoked to challenge Iran’s actions.
What happens next: monitoring by international maritime authorities and possible responses from countries with detained seafarers is expected.
