Iran Threatens “Annihilation” of OpenAI’s $30B Abu Dhabi AI Data Center
Iran has directly threatened OpenAI’s flagship AI data center project in Abu Dhabi, signaling a new phase in escalating tensions involving U.S.-linked tech infrastructure.
The warning raises the stakes for global AI expansion as military threats begin targeting digital assets, not just traditional energy or defense systems.
According to The Verge, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps released a video naming OpenAI’s Stargate facility as a potential target if the U.S. attacks Iranian power infrastructure. The project, valued around $30 billion, is part of a broader $500 billion AI initiative backed by companies including Oracle, Nvidia, and SoftBank.
The video reportedly includes satellite imagery of the Abu Dhabi site and claims it remains fully visible despite attempts to obscure it on mapping platforms, adding a layer of psychological signaling.

“Complete and utter annihilation” would be carried out against U.S.-linked infrastructure, an IRGC spokesperson said.
The threat follows earlier reported strikes on Amazon Web Services facilities in the region, underscoring how data centers are increasingly viewed as strategic assets. Analysts warn that targeting cloud and AI infrastructure could disrupt financial systems, communications, and government operations.
What remains unclear is whether Iran has the capability or intent to follow through on such a high-profile target, and OpenAI has not issued a public response.
For now, the situation leaves one of the world’s largest AI projects exposed to geopolitical risk.
