Iranian Students Rally Again at Tehran and Mashhad Universities Amid U.S. Military Buildup
Iranian university students took to the streets again over the weekend in fresh demonstrations that underscored rising domestic discontent and deepening tensions with the United States.
For the second straight day, students rallied on campuses across Tehran and major cities such as Mashhad, with some clashes breaking out between anti-regime protesters and pro-government groups or Basij militia members. Reuters and local media reported chants against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and rare displays of the pre-1979 lion and sun flag as students voiced grievances.
The renewed protests coincided with heightened fears of conflict after Washington sent a large military deployment into the Middle East to pressure Iran over its nuclear program and as negotiations in Geneva remain stalled. Demonstrators also commemorated those killed in earlier nationwide unrest that began in late 2025.

University officials increased security and restricted access to some campuses amid the tensions. Basij forces were reported to be identifying participants and coordinating with authorities to suppress anti-government chants at several institutions, according to student outlets.
“Iranian students are showing their frustration with the political and economic conditions, risking detention for their voices to be heard,” said one student group organizer, reflecting broad discontent.
The protests matter because they show youth frustration is evolving from economic grievances to overt political opposition at a time when Tehran is also facing pressure from abroad, signaling internal cracks in support for the regime.
Another round of talks between U.S. and Iranian negotiators is expected in Geneva this week as diplomats attempt to avert further escalation.
The direction of both the diplomatic efforts and the protests will shape whether Iran’s domestic unrest intensifies or spreads to other sectors.
