TikTok was banned on govt phones in Australia a couple of years ago because of hacking and spying - they work in tandem with Russian hacker industry.

In December our parliament cut access to social media - except YouTube kids to under 16’s - the rest of the world lost their shit.

It’s about mental health and stopping the harassment, exploitation etc. plus a lot of other things.

The main culprit for harm in Australia was Facebook. Kids didn’t use twitter.

REGULATING media is important.

We fcked up with letting Murdoch create a monopoly in Australia - he decided every election, except the last one. He’s now sold part of his empire (Sky News, foxtel ) to a RUSSIAN oligarch who lives in London.

Our election this year is going to be interesting, as is Canada and the UK. People forget that Biden said Murdoch was the most dangerous man in the world.

Regulation is long overdue

Good article. Should include Google billionaires who own YouTube. They also paid millions in lobbyist dollars

Excellent point. My attempts at brevity (not my strong suit) made strategic decisions and I'm still debating that one.

I'll admit, I have been naive to how much of an impact social media has had in our elections up until this year. The only social media accounts that I have had since 2010, when I deleted my Facebook account, has been youtube, which i wasn't to active in up until I was diagnosed with throat cancer in August of 2023 and ended up having a lot of time on my hands while going through treatments. This really opened my eyes as to the power that social media really has. Real regulation is needed. I think that the banning of Tik Tok was more about not being able to control the content than anything else. The Oligarchs are flexing their control over the narrative.

Regulation is long overdue. Multiple congressional inquiries and hearings about targeting young users, failing to prevent algorithms targeting mental health issues, failing to address bullying, failing to address extremism.... we know people are using these platforms extensively. We know foreign agents are using bots and propaganda to spread discontent and misinformation. Where's the meaningful action?

Of course Trump has manipulated the situation to benefit maga.

Upon opening the app we get “Trump is a hero verbiage.”

Something like, “TikTok is banned but we are fortunate to be working with President Trump to lift it.” This is most terrifying part of it all.
