Is DOGE Coming to Your State? Why It Might Not Look the Same
Why Local Efficiency Programs Look Nothing Like the Federal Model
The federal Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), spearheaded by Elon Musk, has unleashed a storm of aggressive actions and reckless budget cuts, all under the guise of 'efficiency.' The result? Mass layoffs, essential services gutted, environmental protections dismantled, and communities left scrambling to survive.
Now, picture those same destructive tactics creeping into your state. Multiple states across the nation are launching their own government efficiency programs. Now, it is not just the federal workers who have already been impacted feeling the pain, but every single state employee as well. Public services and programs would be gutted and dismantled overnight, thousands suddenly unemployed, and the vulnerable left to their own destruction.
But here's the twist: What’s approaching your state isn't the federal DOGE. It's something entirely different.
Let’s be clear: Everyone supports eliminating waste and fraud. But that's not what the federal DOGE is doing. Its actions are about profit, power consolidation, and dismantling public services for corporate gain. Efficiency is the excuse, not the goal.
What's most telling is what's happening at the state level. Across the country, 17 states, Washington D.C., and even the city of Houston have proposed or implemented their own efficiency efforts. And strikingly, their state-level efficiency plans look nothing like the federal model.
Instead of slash-and-burn chaos, these local programs are careful, collaborative, and measured. Republicans publicly celebrate their ability to pursue efficiency without destroying the government functions their constituents depend on. The message is clear: They know the federal model is a disaster. But their silence proves they won't admit it.
Here's what's happening in your state and why it matters.
What’s Actually Happening in the States
You've likely seen headlines about various states launching their own "efficiency" programs. But make no mistake; what's happening in the states is nothing like what the federal DOGE is doing.
The map below shows just how widespread this trend has become.
Seventeen states, Washington D.C., and the city of Houston have proposed or enacted their own government efficiency initiatives. But unlike the federal DOGE's reckless, unilateral approach, these state-level programs are taking a measured, thoughtful path aimed at improving government operations without destroying essential services.
Notably, some of the most significant efforts are happening in red states, proving that even Republican-led states recognize the destructiveness of the federal model.
Three Different Approaches, One Common Goal
Florida: Fiscal Autonomy Over Compliance
Governor Ron DeSantis made headlines for returning $878 million in federal funds to the U.S. Treasury, claiming the funds came with "ideological strings attached" by the Biden Administration. “For years, Florida has been trying to return federal funds to the federal government due to the ideological strings attached by the Biden Administration—but they couldn't even figure out how to accept it,” DeSantis said. (NY Post)
Is this the most effective approach? Maybe, maybe not. Critics rightly question whether Florida is sacrificing valuable resources that could benefit its residents. But the point is this: Florida's approach is deliberate and targeted, nothing like the federal DOGE's chaotic cuts.
Oklahoma: Transparency and Targeted Improvement
Governor Kevin Stitt’s Oklahoma Division of Government Efficiency (DOGE-OK) offers a different model. Rather than rejecting federal funds outright, the state focuses on internal reforms to cut waste and enhance transparency.
DOGE-OK’s approach is precise and methodical. It involves:
Auditing state purchases.
Eliminating wasteful expenses like state-issued cell phones.
Improving energy efficiency.
Implementing automated systems to streamline operations.
Stitt emphasized, “Our top responsibility as leaders is ensuring we are working on behalf of all four million Oklahomans in the most efficient way possible. DOGE-OK will help identify and root out inefficiencies and government waste.” (Oklahoma.gov)
Unlike the federal DOGE's one-size-fits-all destruction, Oklahoma's program includes a dedicated transparency website where citizens can track progress and access workforce data. Efficiency here means improvement, not destruction.
Wisconsin: Bipartisan Collaboration and Accountability
Then there's Wisconsin’s Government Operations, Accountability, and Transparency (GOAT) Committee, a shining example of collaboration over chaos.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, who created the committee, stated that its goal is to “try and find ways to make government do a better job than we currently are.” (JS Online)
The GOAT Committee was created to identify inefficiencies and improve governmental operations through bipartisan cooperation and evidence-based recommendations. Unlike the federal model, which prioritizes cutting for the sake of cutting, Wisconsin's approach is about building something better.
True efficiency requires thoughtful reform, not reckless gutting of essential services.
Different States, Different Methods, One Shared Reality
Here's the reality: States, regardless of political affiliation, are pursuing efficiency through tailored, careful strategies.
Florida’s method may raise some concerns, but it’s still a targeted effort aimed at what the state sees as fiscal responsibility. Oklahoma’s transparency-first approach is thoughtful and measured. Wisconsin’s GOAT Committee demonstrates the power of bipartisan collaboration.
None of these efforts resemble the federal DOGE’s destructive, slash-and-burn model. And none of these are receiving the backlash that Musk’s DOGE has received. That isn’t a coincidence.
Two DOGE protests
See our reporting on DOGE and it’s chaos here:
And that raises an uncomfortable question for Republicans: If the federal DOGE's approach were genuinely efficient, why are they so unpopular, and why are so many Republican-led states choosing to do something entirely different?
The Hypocrisy They Can't Admit
Here's the real kicker: Republicans know the federal model is a disaster, and their own state programs prove it.
If the federal model were genuinely about efficiency, Republican-led states like Florida and Oklahoma would copy it. Instead, they're rejecting its approach entirely, opting for tailored programs that address their states' unique needs.
And yet, those same Republicans remain silent as the federal DOGE continues its destructive campaign. Why aren't they calling out a federal model they clearly recognize as inefficient? Why aren't they speaking up when it's harming their own constituents?
Because admitting the truth would mean acknowledging their own party is causing actual harm.
Talking Points to Counter the Hypocrisy
No One Is Against Efficiency—Just Reckless Destruction.
What To Say: “Everyone supports eliminating waste and fraud. But what the federal DOGE is doing isn’t efficiency—it’s reckless destruction meant to consolidate power and enrich the wealthy.”
Why It Works: This line clarifies that you’re not against efficiency itself, just the federal DOGE’s brutal, ineffective approach.
States Are Proving the Federal Model Doesn’t Work.
What To Say: “17 states, D.C., and Houston have proposed or implemented efficiency programs that look nothing like the federal DOGE’s chaos. Why? Because even Republicans know the federal model is a disaster.”
Why It Works: Citing concrete numbers and locations gives this argument weight. Pointing out Republican hypocrisy directly hits home.
The Federal DOGE Model Is Inefficient By Its Own Standards.
What To Say: “The federal DOGE’s chaos is so inefficient it’s having to desperately rehire the very experts it just fired—avian flu specialists, nuclear stockpile workers, disaster response experts. That’s not efficiency. It’s incompetence.”
Why It Works: Using specific examples of mass firings and panicked rehirings demonstrates that the federal model doesn’t even achieve the efficiency it claims to seek.
Different States, Different Solutions.
What To Say: “Florida, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin are all pursuing efficiency in ways that work for their states—targeted, transparent, and collaborative. That’s the opposite of the federal DOGE’s one-size-fits-all destruction.”
Why It Works: Highlighting different states’ unique approaches underlines that true efficiency is tailored to local needs, not imposed from above.
Their Silence Is Complicity.
What To Say: “Republicans know the federal model is destructive. Their own state programs prove it. But they refuse to speak out because acknowledging the truth would mean admitting their own party is actively harming their constituents.”
Why It Works: This one cuts deep. Framing silence as complicity forces readers to question why their leaders won’t stand up against the federal DOGE’s destruction.
Actual government efficiency can’t be achieved through a tech startup move-fast and break-things mentality. Such reckless actions harm real people. We are already seeing the fallout.
That’s why it is no mistake— only hypocrisy— that politicians remain largely silent on the destruction of DOGE while installing much more measured programs in their own states. And silence, my friends, is compliance. And compliance is violence.

DOGE is a money grab!!!
Thanks for highlighting these state-level efforts. As you note, many people (most?) support efficiency in government. DOGE is NOT that - it's a takedown of the guardrails that prevent oligarchs like Elon from extracting every last dime from the government and the people.
