Joe Rogan Ignites Firestorm After Claiming Jesus Could Return as AI

During the discussion, Rogan referenced the biblical story of the virgin birth and asked whether a computer — untouched by human reproduction — could be considered a “more virgin” vessel. Rogan then added: “If Jesus does return, you don’t think he could return as artificial intelligence?”
The remarks were immediately met with pushback. Christian scholars noted that mainstream theology teaches a physical, human return of Jesus, not a digital or symbolic one. One religious studies professor told Newsweek the idea is “incompatible with Christian doctrine,” emphasizing that AI cannot represent an incarnation.
AI ethicists also weighed in, warning that the larger concern is people placing spiritual authority in emerging technologies. “The danger isn’t AI pretending to be Jesus,” one researcher said. “It’s people trusting an AI that claims to be.”
On social platforms, users mocked the comments as “peak Rogan,” while meme creators circulated images of a futuristic “AI Jesus” connected to the cloud. Others criticized the comparison as provocative speculation dressed as philosophical debate.
Rogan has not clarified whether the comments were intended literally, symbolically, or as a thought experiment. But the clip continues to circulate widely, fueling renewed conversation about the intersection of faith, technology, and artificial intelligence.
