Josh Hawley Sparks GOP Backlash Over Nationwide Abortion Pill Ban Push
Sen. Josh Hawley’s new push to ban a widely used abortion pill is putting Republicans back into a political fight many had tried to avoid.
The Missouri Republican introduced legislation targeting mifepristone, but the proposal is already exposing hesitation within his own party as election pressures build.
According to reporting from Axios and NOTUS, several Republicans have avoided emphasizing abortion since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, concerned the issue could hurt them with moderate and suburban voters.
Hawley’s bill would direct the FDA to withdraw approval of the drug and restrict its distribution nationwide, despite the fact that medication abortions now account for a majority of cases in the U.S., according to multiple reports.
“Congress must act now to protect the health and safety of women,” Hawley said in a statement.

The push comes as other Republicans are escalating pressure on the FDA through investigations and regulatory demands, even as internal divisions remain over how aggressively to pursue federal restrictions.
That split reflects a broader tension inside the GOP between policy goals and electoral strategy, especially with abortion continuing to drive turnout in key races.
The legislation is not expected to pass in the current Senate, but it is likely to keep the issue in focus as campaigns ramp up.
For now, the fight over abortion pills is becoming a test of how unified Republicans can remain heading into 2026.
