Judge Charges Sánchez’s Wife With 4 Crimes After 2-Year Corruption Probe
The wife of Spain’s prime minister has been formally charged with corruption, marking a major escalation in a case that has shadowed the government for months.
Begoña Gómez, married to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, now faces multiple criminal charges as a judge moves the case toward trial.
The charges include influence peddling, embezzlement, corruption in business dealings, and misappropriation of funds, according to court rulings reported by AFP and Euronews.
Investigators allege Gómez used her position to gain influence tied to a university program at Complutense University in Madrid, including access to resources and institutional backing.

Sánchez has repeatedly rejected the case, calling it politically motivated and tied to a broader campaign against his government.
“There are sufficient indications of criminal conduct,” Judge Juan Carlos Peinado said in the ruling.
The case adds to a series of corruption probes involving figures connected to Sánchez’s administration, increasing political pressure on his coalition government.
It also deepens a broader divide in Spain, where critics see accountability while supporters argue the judiciary is being used for political attacks.
The court is expected to determine next steps, including whether Gómez will face a full jury trial.
The case is now moving into its most consequential phase.
