A federal judge has ordered the Justice Department to fast-track its review of a Freedom of Information Act request seeking records tied to the government’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case files.

The order, issued by Judge Tanya Chutkan, directs the DOJ to expedite processing of FOIA requests filed by the watchdog group Democracy Forward. The filings, submitted on July 25, 2025, seek three categories of records:
The DOJ’s recent review of Epstein-related case files,
Public statements by the Attorney General concerning those files, and
Communications among high-ranking DOJ officials following intense media coverage and public interest in the government’s decision not to release the materials.
The court’s action means the DOJ must now prioritize the search and review of these documents rather than placing them in the standard FOIA queue.
The underlying lawsuit argues that the Epstein records are of exceptional public interest and that the government’s refusal to release them warrants urgent scrutiny. Judge Chutkan’s order does not determine what will ultimately be disclosed but accelerates the timeline for the DOJ to respond.
Further filings in the case will determine which documents can be released, what may be withheld, and whether the DOJ invokes any FOIA exemptions as the process moves forward.
