Judge Rejects Trump Administration Immigration Halt Affecting Green Cards and Work Permits
A federal judge in Boston blocked Trump administration immigration policies that had halted or restricted applications from people tied to 39 countries named in travel-ban rules.
U.S. District Judge Julia Kobick issued a preliminary injunction in a lawsuit brought by about 200 plaintiffs from countries including Iran, Syria, Haiti and Venezuela, according to Reuters. The order currently applies to 22 plaintiffs who showed harm, though the judge asked the parties to address whether relief should extend more broadly.
The case centers on USCIS policies that treated nationality from affected countries as a “significant negative factor” in applications for immigration benefits, including asylum, green cards and work permits. Kobick found the plaintiffs were likely to succeed on claims that the policy violated the Immigration and Nationality Act’s limits on nationality-based discrimination.
The ruling does not permanently end the policy, but it blocks enforcement against covered plaintiffs while litigation continues.
