Judge Warns Trump Administration Over D.C. Golf Course Changes as Legal Fight Expands
A federal judge warned the Trump administration not to begin major work at East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C., without notifying the court, adding legal pressure to a growing dispute over the future of the city’s public golf courses.
U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes declined to immediately issue a temporary restraining order, but she told the government to provide notice before major action at the course. AP reported that Reyes specifically said officials should consult government lawyers before cutting down more than 10 trees.
The warning came after the D.C. Preservation League sought emergency court intervention, citing concerns that major renovation work could begin before legal challenges are resolved. ABC News reported that Reyes warned Justice Department lawyers of “serious consequences” if major work began without court notice.
The administration has said no formal closure order or imminent major construction decision had been issued. That distinction matters legally: the judge did not block all maintenance, but she put the government on notice that larger changes could trigger court scrutiny.

The dispute follows the federal government’s termination of National Links Trust’s 50-year lease to operate East Potomac, Langston and Rock Creek golf courses. Reuters reported that the nonprofit disputed the termination and said it had invested more than $8.5 million in course projects.
The controversy has also widened beyond East Potomac. The Washington Post reported that the administration asked the Washington Commanders’ charitable foundation to consider overseeing Langston Golf Course, a historically significant public course tied to Black golf history in Washington.
For D.C. residents, the immediate consequence is uncertainty over who will control public golf assets and whether major changes can proceed without further public notice or court review.
