FBI Arrests Suspect in Jan. 6 Pipe Bomb Case
Federal authorities have arrested a suspect believed to have planted the pipe bombs discovered near the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee headquarters on January 5, 2021, according to two law-enforcement sources who spoke with CBS News and other outlets.

The arrest, which reportedly occurred Thursday, marks the first major break in the nearly five-year investigation into the explosives that were found just before the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Until now, the individual seen in surveillance footage placing the devices had remained unidentified despite extensive public tips and multiple FBI appeals.
Details remain limited. The suspect’s name, charges, and motive have not yet been released, and federal officials have not issued a public statement. The case is currently under seal, and no court documents have been made available.
The pipe bombs—positioned outside both major party headquarters—were described at the time as “viable” devices capable of detonating. Their discovery prompted evacuations and diverted law-enforcement resources on the day Congress met to certify the 2020 election results.
This is a developing story. More information is expected once the Justice Department formally announces charges.
