Kash Patel Launches $250M Lawsuit After Atlantic Alleges Drinking Issues
FBI Director Kash Patel has launched a $250 million lawsuit against The Atlantic, but the legal fight may open more risk than it closes.
According to Reuters, the lawsuit targets a report alleging Patel engaged in excessive drinking and unexplained absences that raised national security concerns. Patel calls the story false and claims the outlet acted with “actual malice,” a key legal standard.
The Atlantic, however, says it stands by its reporting, which cited more than two dozen anonymous sources describing disrupted operations and troubling behavior.

That creates a high-stakes clash: to win, Patel may need to prove not just errors, but that journalists knowingly published false claims.
Legal experts note that discovery could force internal communications, source vetting, and rebuttal evidence into the open—potentially exposing contradictions on either side.
The case is early, but the bigger risk may be what comes out before any verdict.
