Macron Prepares French Navy Escort Mission for Strait of Hormuz Shipping
France is preparing a naval escort mission in the Strait of Hormuz — but only once fighting in the region eases.
French President Emmanuel Macron said the plan is designed to protect commercial shipping through one of the world’s most critical oil routes, where tensions have pushed global energy markets on edge.
According to Al Jazeera, Macron announced the proposal while speaking in Cyprus on March 9, describing the potential deployment as a “purely defensive” operation aimed at gradually reopening maritime traffic.

The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply, and disruptions there have historically triggered major price spikes and security concerns for global trade.
Macron did not announce an immediate deployment. Instead, he said France is preparing the option so escort operations could begin when the security situation stabilizes.
The announcement comes as Western governments assess how to protect commercial vessels moving through the Gulf amid rising regional tensions.
Whether France would operate alone or as part of a broader European or NATO maritime mission remains unclear.
