MAGA Turns on Itself After Trump’s Rob Reiner ‘TDS’ Post
A Truth Social post from President Donald Trump following the deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife has sparked rare public infighting inside the MAGA political ecosystem, with several Republican allies breaking ranks to criticize the message as inappropriate.
Trump’s post, shared early Monday, referred to Reiner as a “tortured and struggling” figure and blamed what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome” for Reiner’s hostility toward him. While the president described the deaths as “very sad,” the framing was widely criticized for politicizing a family tragedy.
The reaction exposed visible divisions among Trump supporters online.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), a frequent Trump ally, called the post “inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was just brutally murdered,” adding that GOP leaders and White House staff were “afraid” to confront it. Massie challenged fellow Republicans to publicly defend the statement.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, another prominent Trump supporter, also pushed back, urging empathy and caution. In a repost of Trump’s message, Greene wrote that the situation was a “family tragedy” involving addiction and mental health issues and should not be turned into a political fight.

Other conservative voices echoed the criticism. Commentator Tony Katz said it was possible to disagree with Reiner’s politics while still condemning the tone of Trump’s response. Several pro-Trump accounts described the post as unnecessary or a misstep, even as they continued to support the president.
At the same time, staunch Trump defenders rallied to his side. Influencers and supporters argued Trump was “speaking the truth” about Reiner’s long history of attacking him and dismissed critics as overreacting or acting in bad faith.
The dispute quickly spread across X and Truth Social, generating millions of views and drawing attention from major media outlets. While most of Trump’s base continues to back him, the episode stands out as a rare moment of public dissent among MAGA figures, particularly over tone and decorum rather than policy.
Authorities have said the investigation into the deaths remains ongoing, and officials have urged the public to avoid speculation as the family mourns.
