Mamdani Blasts Trump Over ‘Illegal’ Iran Strikes Without Congress
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani blasted the Trump administration’s joint U.S.–Israeli military strikes in Iran, calling the actions a “catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression” and warning that they defy constitutional limits on military force.
Mamdani issued the criticism Saturday, shortly after the strikes began, labeling the operation “illegal” and “a violation of federal and international law.”
In a statement quoted by CBS New York, he said the strikes by the United States and Israel amounted to “bombing cities, killing civilians, opening a new theater of war,” and he argued that Americans want “peace” and relief from domestic crises, not further military engagements.
Seeking to reassure city residents, Mamdani noted that he has been in contact with the NYPD and emergency management officials, directing enhanced coordination across city agencies and increased patrols of diplomatic, cultural and religious sites out of “an abundance of caution.”

He also spoke directly to Iranian New Yorkers, calling them “part of the fabric of this city — our neighbors, small business owners, students, artists, workers and community leaders” and assuring them they “will be safe here.”
Mamdani’s remarks come amid a broader national debate over the legality and wisdom of the military action, with lawmakers and leaders across New York and New Jersey reacting to the strikes. Some federal lawmakers have called for congressional oversight and restraint as tensions rise.
The timing of Mamdani’s condemnation is notable because it follows a recent White House meeting between the mayor and President Trump on unrelated federal and city priorities.
As the conflict in the Middle East continues to unfold, city leaders are balancing national security concerns with local safety and political fallout.
