Marines Reveal Mid-Air Shell Explosion Over I-5 Struck Vance Security Vehicles
A newly released military report says a rare malfunction caused live artillery shrapnel to fall onto a California highway during an event attended by Vice President JD Vance but it leaves key questions unresolved.
According to the Associated Press and regional reporting, a Marine Corps shell exploded mid-air over Interstate 5 during a 2025 demonstration at Camp Pendleton, striking California Highway Patrol vehicles assigned to Vance’s security detail. No injuries were reported, but the incident immediately halted the exercise.
Investigators called it a “one in a million” failure and ruled out negligence, but said there is still no definitive explanation for why the round detonated early.
The event had already drawn criticism from California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who warned against firing live ammunition over a major public highway and ordered a closure ahead of the demonstration.
Lawmakers later demanded answers, raising concerns about decision-making and safety protocols.
The report clarifies what happened but not why it happened.
