Meta's New Facebook AI Search Uses Public Posts as Answers, Reflecting a Larger Shift in How AI Finds Information
Meta is rolling out a new feature called AI Mode on Facebook that uses artificial intelligence to answer user questions by drawing from publicly shared content across Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and other Meta platforms. Instead of presenting traditional search results dominated by links, the system generates summarized responses and allows users to continue the conversation with follow-up questions.
According to Meta, AI Mode is intended to provide answers grounded in “what people are saying publicly across our apps.” The feature is powered by Meta AI and represents another step toward conversational search experiences that compete with products such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.
The move highlights a broader trend in artificial intelligence: community-generated information is becoming increasingly important. While Google frequently surfaces Reddit discussions in AI-generated search results, Meta is leveraging its own ecosystem of public posts, Groups, comments, and creator content.

The implications extend beyond search. Public Facebook content may become more valuable as AI systems use it to generate recommendations and explanations. That could increase the importance of public Groups, niche communities, and creator engagement across Meta’s platforms.
Reaction has been mixed. Some users welcome AI-assisted discovery, while others continue expressing concerns about AI integration into search and the broader use of public content for AI systems. Similar concerns have appeared in Facebook and Reddit discussions about Meta AI’s expanding role across the company’s products.
For Meta, the launch signals a larger ambition: turning its social platforms into both a content network and an AI knowledge source.
