Mike Johnson Offers Condolences After Rob Reiner Killings, Declines to Address Trump’s Remarks
House Speaker Mike Johnson briefly addressed the killing of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, on Monday but declined to respond when asked about President Donald Trump’s controversial comments on the tragedy.
Reiner, 78, a legendary Hollywood director known for The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally, and his wife were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood, California home on Sunday, December 14. Authorities have described the case as a family tragedy involving “senseless violence.” Their adult son was arrested later that night on suspicion of murder. Investigators have said there is no public evidence tying the killings to politics.
Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, Johnson called the deaths “another reminder of just the senseless violence and evil that’s so rampant in our society,” adding that his prayers were with the Reiner family.
When CNN correspondent Manu Raju followed up by asking about Donald Trump’s Truth Social post — which blamed Reiner’s political activism and described the director as “very bad for our country” — Johnson did not answer and walked away without taking questions. The exchange was captured on video and quickly circulated online.

Trump’s post drew widespread backlash across the political spectrum for its tone, with critics accusing the president of politicizing a violent family tragedy. In later remarks, Trump defended the post as candid, despite criticism from Democrats and some Republicans.
Johnson’s decision not to address Trump’s remarks echoed previous moments in which Republican leaders have declined to comment directly on the president’s most inflammatory statements. The clip of Johnson walking away spread rapidly on social media Monday, fueling renewed debate over GOP leadership’s willingness to publicly challenge Trump.
As of Monday evening, Johnson’s office had not issued any additional statement regarding Trump’s comments.
