Mike Johnson Pushes DHS Funding Bill as Senate Deal Collapses Over ICE
House Republicans pushed through a stopgap funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security after rejecting a Senate-backed compromise, escalating a standoff that has already stretched for weeks.
The conflict centers on immigration enforcement. According to Reuters and The Guardian, the Senate bill excluded funding for ICE and parts of Customs and Border Protection, which Republicans refused to accept.
Instead, the House passed its own short-term plan funding the entire department, including enforcement agencies, through late May. The vote was narrow and immediately triggered pushback from Senate Democrats, who have signaled the proposal will likely fail.
The shutdown, now in its second month, has left thousands of DHS workers unpaid and caused major airport disruptions. Reuters reported that staffing shortages have already affected TSA operations, forcing federal intervention to ensure some workers are paid.
The standoff remains unresolved, with both sides blaming each other and no clear path forward as the Senate weighs its next move.
