Missing North Carolina Mom Found Alive After 24 Years, Cites ‘Domestic Issues’
A North Carolina woman who vanished in 2001 has been found alive after 24 years, authorities confirmed this week.
The discovery ends a decades-old missing persons case — but raises new questions about why she left and how she remained undiscovered for so long.
The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office said Michele Hundley Smith, who disappeared in December 2001 after telling family she was going Christmas shopping, was located Feb. 20 in North Carolina. According to People, detectives reopened investigative leads after receiving new information in the case.
Sheriff Sam Page told People there were no signs of criminal wrongdoing tied to her disappearance. However, the explanation Smith provided introduces a personal dimension that had not previously been public.

“Let me just say there were no allegations of any foul play regarding her leaving,” Page told People, adding that Smith said she left due to ongoing domestic issues at the time.
Authorities have not disclosed where Smith had been living during the 24-year span or what prompted the new tip that led to her being located.
The case highlights how long-term missing person investigations can evolve years later through new leads, technology, or personal decisions. Law enforcement officials emphasized that the situation does not appear to involve abduction or criminal activity.
It remains unclear whether additional details will be released, or whether Smith will speak publicly about her decision.
For now, a mystery that lingered for nearly a quarter century has been formally closed.
