Missouri Lawmaker Files Impeachment Probe Against Secretary of State Over Voter Petition Fight
Missouri Rep. Will Jobe (D-Independence) confirmed he has filed a resolution seeking an impeachment investigation of Secretary of State Denny Hoskins over how Hoskins handled a high-profile referendum petition this week.
The move immediately raised political tension in Jefferson City, where control of the House remains in Republican hands and cooperation across the aisle is uncertain. Jobe says the issue goes to the core of voter rights and public trust in the electoral process.
According to St. Louis Public Radio, Jobe filed House Resolution 3879 on Jan. 7, arguing Hoskins’ office “stop, slow down and obstruct” the ability of Missouri citizens to qualify a referendum on a recently passed mid-decade congressional redistricting map.
Jobe claims the Secretary of State refused to verify a portion of signatures submitted in support of the referendum, effectively discounting them and keeping the measure off the ballot. He said his own signature was among those reportedly unverified.
The impeachment resolution alleges Hoskins “abused his authority” and betrayed his oath to protect constitutional rights, a charge echoed by House Minority Leader Ashley Aune.

“This is the mechanism that is allowed to me as a member of this body…” Jobe said, defending his decision to pursue the resolution.
Because the Missouri House is led by Republicans, the resolution’s prospects are slim, but the move puts pressure on lawmakers as lawsuits over the referendum process proceed in Cole County court, and GOP leaders weigh their next steps.
The dispute matters because it puts a spotlight on election administration and access to ballot measures in Missouri, touching on broader debates about voter rights and partisan oversight.
The next step is committee consideration, where Republican leadership will decide whether to advance the impeachment investigation.
