Montgomery County Police Charge Employee in Killing of ‘Millionaire Philanthropist’
An 87-year-old Washington-area businessman and philanthropist identified by national outlets as a millionaire was shot and killed inside his Potomac senior living apartment, and police have charged a 22-year-old employee in the case.
The focus now shifts to motive and whether the victim’s reported financial prominence will play a role as prosecutors build their case.
Montgomery County Police say Robert Fuller Jr. was found unresponsive Feb. 14 at Cogir Potomac Senior Living. Detectives observed evidence consistent with a contact gunshot wound to the head, and no firearm was recovered from the apartment, according to the department’s release.
Police arrested Maurquise Emillo James, 22, and charged him with first-degree murder. Investigators say surveillance showed a masked person entering through a side stairwell door that had been propped open, with the alarm system deactivated.

While police documents do not describe Fuller’s wealth, People and Fox News identified him as a millionaire philanthropist with longstanding business and charitable ties in the Washington region.
Investigators have not publicly confirmed a financial motive.
Police stated detectives received a lead indicating ballistic evidence linked this case to a separate shooting incident involving a Maryland state trooper during a traffic stop.
Why it matters now is that the homicide occurred inside a secured senior living facility in Potomac — one of Maryland’s most affluent communities — raising concerns about internal access controls and resident safety.

James is being held pending court proceedings, where prosecutors are expected to outline forensic findings, surveillance evidence, and any additional details surrounding motive.
For now, the case remains centered on how a man widely described as wealthy and philanthropic was killed inside a controlled residential setting — and what investigators reveal next.
