NASA’s Psyche Spacecraft Draws Online Attention During Mars Flyby on Journey to Metal-Rich Asteroid
NASA’s Psyche spacecraft is making a close pass by Mars as part of a gravity assist maneuver designed to push the probe deeper into space on its way to asteroid 16 Psyche — a metal-rich object that has fueled growing fascination online.
The spacecraft launched in 2023 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket and is expected to reach the asteroid in 2029. NASA scientists believe the asteroid could reveal clues about how rocky planets formed because it may contain unusually high concentrations of iron and nickel.

The Mars flyby has generated strong social media interest, with users sharing visuals of the maneuver and discussing the possibility of future asteroid resource exploration. Others compared the mission to science fiction concepts involving deep-space mining and long-range exploration.
NASA says the mission is also helping test autonomous navigation systems and solar electric propulsion technology that could support future missions farther into the solar system.
