New Polls Show Trump Approval Collapsing Nationwide Ahead of Midterms
Poll after poll suggests President Donald Trump’s support is sliding at a critical moment for Republicans heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
Recent national surveys show Trump’s overall approval rating dipping to around 38%, with more Americans disapproving than approving of his job performance. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, that figure ties the lowest level of his second term so far.
The discontent is broad: Americans’ views of Trump’s immigration agenda, a signature issue of his presidency, have soured significantly. In the same Reuters/Ipsos survey, just 39% said they approve of how he’s handling immigration versus 53% who disapprove. Support for aggressive immigration enforcement is especially eroded after controversial federal actions in Minneapolis that resulted in civilian deaths, with a majority now saying agents went “too far.”
Voting blocs that helped Trump in 2024 are showing cracks. Multiple polls reported this month indicate that nearly seven in ten voters under age 30 disapprove of his performance. A separate YouGov/Economist survey finds an overwhelming 71% of Americans feel the country is “out of control” under Trump, signaling deep unease across demographics.

Even within the Republican Party, tensions are emerging. Some GOP figures have publicly criticized the administration’s immigration enforcement tactics, warning the approach could alienate moderates and swing voters.
Pollsters and strategists say these trends spell risk for Republicans in November, as faded support on hot-button issues and across key constituencies could tip competitive races. With enthusiasm waning and disapproval rising, the electoral landscape is shifting as candidates prepare for a pivotal midterm cycle.
