New York Times Faces EEOC Lawsuit Alleging Bias Against White Male Editor
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has sued The New York Times, alleging the newspaper violated federal civil rights law by denying a white male employee a promotion because of race and/or sex.
The case centers on a Deputy Real Estate Editor position and the EEOC’s claim that the Times’ diversity, equity and inclusion goals influenced the promotion process. The allegation has not been proven in court.
The Times disputes the lawsuit. According to Washington Post reporting, the newspaper called the claims unfounded and politically motivated.

The case quickly gained attention on X and Facebook, where journalists, legal news accounts and partisan media outlets framed it as either a major DEI enforcement case or another Trump-era legal move against a media institution.
The broader consequence is practical: employers may face closer scrutiny over promotion records, DEI language and whether race or sex played any role in employment decisions.
