Newark ICE Facility Draws New Scrutiny After Gov. Sherrill Is Denied Entry
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill was denied access to Delaney Hall in Newark on Memorial Day as detainees, families and advocates continued protesting conditions inside the privately run ICE detention facility.
Sherrill visited the site with U.S. Sen. Andy Kim and other Democratic lawmakers as a hunger and labor strike reportedly entered its fourth day. Local reports say detainees and families have alleged poor conditions and inadequate medical care, while lawmakers have called for more oversight and, in some cases, closure of the facility.

DHS pushed back, calling Sherrill’s visit a political stunt and saying visitation was suspended because of safety concerns outside the facility, according to local reporting.
The Newark dispute now carries broader stakes for immigration enforcement in New Jersey: who gets access to federal detention facilities, how allegations about conditions are verified, and whether state and federal officials can force more transparency from ICE.
