Norovirus Outbreak on Caribbean Princess Adds to Recent Cruise Ship Illness Cases
A norovirus outbreak aboard Princess Cruises’ Caribbean Princess has sickened 115 passengers and crew members, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program said 102 of 3,116 passengers and 13 of 1,131 crew members reported illness during the ship’s April 28–May 11 voyage. The main symptoms were diarrhea and vomiting, and the causative agent was listed as norovirus.
Princess Cruises reported increasing cleaning and disinfection procedures, collecting stool specimens, isolating ill passengers and crew, and consulting with CDC officials on sanitation and illness reporting.

The outbreak is not an isolated event in the CDC’s 2026 cruise data. The agency also lists a March norovirus outbreak aboard Princess Cruises’ Star Princess, along with other gastrointestinal illness outbreaks this year.
The practical issue for travelers is not panic, but prevention: norovirus spreads easily through sick people, contaminated food or water, and contaminated surfaces.
